How to Choose and Hang a Designer Pendant Light: Size, Height & Placement Guide

by Ornella Diiiz 24 Sep 2025 0 Comments

Planning to replace your lighting? A designer pendant light is one of the easiest ways to give a room character. But a beautiful lamp only works if it is the right size, hung at the right height and paired with the right bulb. This practical guide from Diiiz answers the questions everyone asks before buying: how big, how high, how many and where.

What is a designer pendant light?

Welles geometric designer pendant light by Diiiz A pendant light hangs from the ceiling on a cable, chain or rod, which is either discreet or part of the design itself. Unlike a chandelier, which is often bulky, a pendant lamp is visually light and focuses the light where you need it: over a table, a kitchen island or a reading corner.

Why choose one? Designer pendant lights add a sculptural touch even when switched off, they are more versatile than chandeliers (alone, in pairs or in a row), the cable length can usually be adjusted, and they are often more affordable than a statement chandelier.

How high should you hang a pendant light?

Height is the most common mistake. Use these simple rules:

  • Above a dining table: leave 75 to 85 cm (30 to 34 in) between the table top and the bottom of the lamp. Guests can see each other and the light stays on the table, not in their eyes.
  • Above a kitchen island: 80 to 95 cm (32 to 37 in) above the worktop, a little higher than over a table because people stand.
  • In a passage or open space: keep at least 2.10 m (7 ft) between the floor and the bottom of the lamp so nobody bumps into it.
  • Next to a sofa or bed: a low-hanging pendant can replace a floor or bedside lamp; hang it around 50 to 60 cm above the mattress or armrest.

With high ceilings (above 2.70 m), you can raise the lamp a few centimetres, or choose a larger model so it doesn’t look lost.

Which size of pendant light for your table or room?

  • Over a table: a single pendant should be roughly one half to two thirds of the table’s width. For a 90 cm wide table, choose a shade of about 45 to 60 cm.
  • In the middle of a room: add the length and width of the room in metres and multiply by 10 to get a good diameter in centimetres. A 4 x 5 m living room calls for a lamp of about 45 cm.
  • Small rooms and bedrooms: compact models of 20 to 35 cm keep the space airy.

One, two or three pendant lights?

For a long table or kitchen island, a row of pendants often looks better than a single lamp. Count about one lamp for every 60 to 75 cm of length, keep 60 to 75 cm between lamps, and stop at least 30 cm before each end of the table.

  • Industrial trio: combine three metal models of different shapes, such as the Rango, Colta and Vintage bar pendant lights.
  • Harmonious row: repeat three identical lamps like the Slice or the Kwisty pendant light.
  • Statement piece: above a round table, one generous lamp is enough.

Choosing the right style for each interior

Bulbs and light: the finishing touch

  • Colour temperature: choose warm white (2700 K) for living and dining rooms, neutral white (3000 to 4000 K) for kitchens and work areas.
  • Open or exposed bulbs: pick a decorative or frosted LED bulb so it doesn’t dazzle.
  • Dimmer: a dimmable bulb lets the same pendant light a family dinner or a cosy evening.
  • Layered lighting: a pendant creates ambience but rarely lights a whole room. Add wall lamps or table lamps for reading and working.

Our checklist before buying

  1. Measure your table, island or room and note the ceiling height.
  2. Check the cable length and whether it can be adjusted.
  3. Choose a style that matches your interior and that you won’t tire of: lights last for years.
  4. Plan the bulb (socket type, temperature, dimmable or not).
