The Barcelona chair was created in 1929 by Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe for the German pavilion of the Barcelona International Exhibition. This modern lounge chair is made up of individual leather cushions: one for the back, another for the seat. The structure of the Mies Van der Rohe inspired Barcelona chair in leather is made of four welded, polished metal branches, giving a smooth and shiny look. The reissue of the Knoll Barcelona chair is extremely elegant and will bring a touch of design and modernism and minimalism to your home.
This replica of the Barcelona chair was inspired by the folding chair of the pharaohs and by the Roman cross shaped stool: a truly vintage armchair; designer and modern! The Knoll Barcelona chair, or Knoll Barcelona armchair or simply Barcelona (name and model filed), is one of the most emblematic pieces of furniture of the 20th century. The Miel Van der Rohe Knoll Barcelona armchair is a chair with a clear structure and an X-shaped chrome steel base, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and his partner Lilly Reich.
The Mies Van Der Rohe inspired Barcelona chair quickly became a model of modern classicism. It was almost immediately commercialised, but its production stopped in 1931. Knoll relaunched its production in 1948 on an industrial scale, Florence Knoll.
Mies Van der Rohe was famous for his unique creations, he was all the more so since he was one of the only ones to use precious materials. The materials used for the production of the first Barcelona armchair were stainless steel and leather. Leather upholstery straps are used (nine for the seat, eight for the back, attached with straps, also in leather).
The current Knoll Barcelona chairs are not so different from the originals. Mies Van der Rohe redrew the chairs of the 1950s, three years after the death of Lilly Reich, using the new possibilities of stainless steel. This allowed the structure of the Mies Van Der Rohe Barcelona chair to be made of a single piece of metal.
