Born in 1908 in Connecticut, George Nelson was with Charles & Ray Eames one of the founders of American modernism.
He graduated from Yale University in 1928. In 1932, Nelson, Eliot Noyes, Charles Eames and Walter B. Ford received the Rome Prize.
Whilst he was the design director at Herman Miller, he developed a long series of successful collaborations with Ray et Charles Eames, Harry Bertoia, Richard Schultz, Donald Knorr and Isamu Noguchi.
He set new standards for the involvement of design in all areas of society. He was also a pioneer in brand management and in the use of graphics.
George Nelson is described as ‘the creator of pretty and practical things”. He died in New York in 1986.
