Born in 1917 in Michigan, Florence Knoll Bassett, studied architecture at the Cranbrook Academy of Art alongside important names of the Bauhaus. She was also Mies van der Rohe’s student. In 1941, she met Hans Knoll.
Together, they develop the KNOLL enterprise which was one of the most creative and prolific post war design companies. Through the ‘planning unit’, they imposed their vision on layout and design. At the time, this was a unique service that mixed interior architecture, design, textiles and production in the aim of fulfilling practical and aesthetic requirements from clients. After the death of her husband in 1955, Florence became head of the company.
KNOLL was of major importance in the world of design during the 20th century. The company worked with designers such as Eero Saarinen, Isamu Noguchi, and Ross Lovegrove. KNOLL reedited several pieces including the Barcelona chair from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
During the 50’s, they collaborate with Harry Bertoia and created the ‘Diamond Chair’
