Eero Saarinen was an American with Finnish origins. He was born in 1910, his mother was an artist and his father was a well renowned finish architect.

Eero Saarinen studied architecture at Yale University before returning to Cranbrook in 1936, to start a sculpture and furniture making course.

He had a close relationship with Charles and Ray Eames and was good friends with Florence Knoll who had a big impact on his work. Saarinen created the tulip chair in 1941 after collaborating with Charles Eames. He received his first MOMA award for this chair. He said ‘I wanted to create a chair that was made from one piece”. Emblem of organic design, his work is characterized by the use of fiberglass.
