CHARLES AND RAY EAMES (1907-1988)

« The revolutionary couple. »

Charles Eames was born in 1907. He started his architecture degree in 1925 at the University of Saint Louis in Washington. He stopped his studies 2 years later to work as a worker in a factory that produced furniture.

During a trip to Europe, Charles Eames discovered Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier. Fascinated by these two monuments, Charles Eames, started a new architecture degree in Michigan. Whilst he was a professor of industrial design, he met his assistant, Ray Kaiser, who became his wife in 1941. He then opened an architecture cabinet with Charles Gray and worked with Eliel Saarinen and his son Eero Saarinen.

The Eames couple marked the 20th century through the use of new materials (such as laminated wood and fiber glass), and through the research of new molding and bending techniques. This allowed them to create comfortable and elegant furniture that could easily be mass produced.
