Charles Edouard Le Corbusier (1887-1965)
Le Corbusier was born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in 1887.
He initially trained as an engraver and turned to architecture in 1904.
Le Corbusier has had a deep influence on twentieth century architecture and design. With Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, Alvar Aalto and Theo van Doesburg he personifies the modern movement.
His architectural "language" applies to budget housing as well as well as to luxury villas. In 1926 Le Corbusier defines “modern architecture" in five points. These were applied by Eileen Gray and Jean Badovici for the construction of the villa E1027.
Le Corbusier designed several pieces of furniture including the famous LC1, L2, CL3, LC4 series. During the same period he also designed tables, chairs (LC1) and a full range of two and three-seater sofas.
