Harry Bertoia (1915-1978)

Arieto Bertoia was born in Italy in 1915 and moved to the United States in the 1930s.
He studied design and jewellery in Detroit. During the 30’s he met Edmund Bacon, Charles and Ray Eames and Walter Gropius.
In 1939 he started to teach jewellery design and metalworking. Amongst other things he created wedding rings for Charles and Ray Eames. In 1943, he moved to California to work with the Eames couple.
In 1950, Bertoia opened his own studio and worked with Hans and Florence Knoll. He created the famous Diamond chair. In his own words, "If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like a sculpture. Space passes right through them."
